FACULTY DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP

The primary goals of higher education institutions are enhancing and maintaining academic excellence, scholarship, and public service. Expectations of education quality, the changing technology and its impacts on teaching and learning, the rubric of assessment, and the changing paradigms in teaching and learning are some of the challenges faced by the teaching fraternity all the time.

The unprecedented growth of tertiary institutions in the past decade has led to a shortage of updated and well trained faculty members and has created a quality challenge for education. There is a need for well-trained faculty members who will help improve programmes to produce quality graduates. To help faculty develop an aptitude for life-long learning and exposure to advances in their field through continuing training and exposure to new knowledge, the Association of African Universities (AAU) is offering a 4-day training workshop on faculty development.

Workshop Goals

The workshop will provide a forum for discussion, resource sharing, and application of various research, teaching technologies and pedagogies. By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:

  • Describe best practices in faculty development, based on the available literature
  • Define the role and scope of faculty development
  • Consider a broad range of faculty development approaches, from workshops to communities of practice
  • Apply key principles and strategies in the development of programs and activities
  • Design a systematic evaluation of a faculty development program or activity
  • Identify an agenda for research and scholarship in faculty development
  • Integrate lessons learned in the renewal or implementation of faculty development initiatives in their own settings
  • Increase understanding of the changing roles of faculty
  • Understand key issues in teaching and learning
  • Facilitate active learning in diverse classrooms
  • Become exposed to the use of various technology tools in the classroom
  • Understand new presentation techniques
  • New perspective in scholarly and research work
