University Advancement Workshop: African HEI’s in an Age of Discontinuity

Esteemed Colleagues,

Special invitation to AAU: University Advancement Workshop: AFRICAN HEI’S IN AN AGE OF DISCONTINUITY at the Kingdom Hotel Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Greetings from the AAU and wishing you all a Happy New Year

At the beginning of 2017 I write to you in order to again bring to your attention the AAU University Advancement Workshops that will be offered during the course of 2017 (please refer to the attached list).

In all likelihood 2017 will be a watershed year for Africa’s Institutions of Higher Education. The impact of the various sociopolitical, socio-economic as well as competitive driving forces are such that it is quite likely that Africa’s HEI’s, collectively and individually, will be confronted with fundamental decisions that may very well involve their future sustainable success.

This also informed AAU’s decisions when the focus and range of 2017 University Advancement workshops had to be determined.

Our first workshop will be offered from 29th to 31st March 2017 at Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. This first workshop will challenge HEI leaders – members of University Councils, Rectors/ Vice Chancellors/ Presidents of HEI’s as well as executive/senior university leaders – to fundamentally re-think the future of Africa’s HEI’s in context of the almost unstoppable impact of the major driving forces that they have to contend with. The fundamental challenge is to, as we move forward into the 21st century, re-imagine our respective HEI’s in the context of the fundamental principles of truth, wealth, good and aesthetics:

  • Truth –the degree to which the HEI, in its specific ecosystem, and in terms of inputs, behavior and outputs, truthfully
meet the needs of the ecosystem in a sustainable manner
  • Wealth – from a narrow institutional perspective, ensuring the systemic sustainability of the particular HEI (it is the
notion of the ‘triple bottom line’; plus, the degree to which the recipients of a particular HEI’s inputs, behavior and
outputs, derive ‘wealth’ from this dynamic interaction
  • Good – from an ecosystem perspective, the degree to which the HEI makes a significant impact in meeting societal
needs in a sustainable and mutually beneficial manner
  • Aesthetics – referring specifically to both staff and students in terms of them experiencing the true ‘beauty of work’
and beauty of studying in their respective interactions with the particular HEI’s.

This specific workshop will challenge participants in various ways, and will ask from them to objectively re-examine their entrenched beliefs and paradigms so that as a collective, we can forge achievable means to strive towards the attainment of a distinctly different, better, as well as sustainable future for our respective HEI’s.

I would therefore like to extend an invitation that you should join us in this not to be missed workshop at Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

In the past this particular workshop has proven to be in high demand. Early registration is therefore essential as only a limited number of participants can be accommodated.

Looking forward to our discussions in Victoria Falls!

Yours faithfully

Prof. Etienne Ehile

Secretary General
