Workshop on Online Teaching and Learning Management

Background and Rationale

The beginning of the twenty-first century is being perceived as an information period, of which advanced education assumes a critical role. The essential objectives of advanced education foundations are improving and keeping up scholastic greatness, grant, and open administration. Desires for training quality and, the changing standards in educating and learning are a portion of the difficulties that instructing clique faces constantly. These when combined with enormous increment sought after for advanced education calls for concerns with regard to how institutions can suit the majority without bargaining the nature and quality of instructing and learning.

With the above patterns happening in almost every establishment of higher learning, it has turned out to be basic that staff build up a fitness life-long learning and have an introduction to new changes/patterns in their field through continuous training and presentation to new information, for example, web based instructing and management. Web based learning and digitized training are developing exponentially consistently, also the propagation of worldwide massive open online courses (MOOC). Understudies of today, alluded to as “digital natives” access free courses from adroit subject experts everywhere throughout the world without limits to space and time. As students endeavor to improve learning results; faculty has to upgrade its skills and knowledge to perform in the digital age institution and work environment.

Many universities and learning organizations are adopting the new trend of e Learning to increase students’ enrollment and achievements. However, many faculties fail to recognize the changing roles of academic faculty members, the “digital immigrants.” Conventional faculty pedagogical role has changed to e-pedagogy, managerial, social and technological roles in the virtual learning environment.

Workshop Goals

This workshop is intended to help participants in building up the required aptitude/expertise in theory and practice to work viably in the e-learning environment. The spotlight isn’t just on the technical side, yet on the changing roles to suit the requests of the creative framework, developing technologies and address diverse learning styles.  The workshop will explore several key issues that educators need to understand about teaching and learning in the digital age. It will also consider; how online learning is different from traditional methods of learning and examinations ; how the digital practices of young people are continually changing; and explore some key considerations that need to be addressed while designing learning environments that are engaging and student centered.

Training Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Apply evidenced-based approach to design, develop and manage online courses reflectively and pragmatically for teaching online or in a blended learning environment.

2. Recognize and be able to describe the characteristics of effective online and blended learning programmes.

3. Be able to explain how the Community of Inquiry framework, and similar perspectives can help promote successful learning in online programmes.

4. Understand the needs and nature of online learners.

5. Appreciate the range of available technologies and learn how to maintain knowledge of emerging technology trends, identifying those systems most appropriate to the needs of your courses and students.
6. Demonstrate knowledge of ethical and legal issues relating to online teaching.

Target Groups

All academic faculty lecturers, learning and training instructors, educational researchers and administrators, directors and coordinators of distance education, curriculum designers and developers, e Learning managers and coordinators, I.C.T program directors and managers, and general practitioners of scholarship and teaching.

Date and Venue

The workshop will be held from Tuesday, 3rd December to Friday, 6th December 2019 at the Association of African Universities Secretariat, Accra, Ghana. Departure is on Saturday, 7th December 2019.
