Professor Bakri Osman Saeed, President of the Association of African Universities (AAU) Governing Board and President of Sudan International University, has been appointed an honorary Professor by Queen Mary College – University of London (QMUL). The AAU congratulates Prof. Saeed for his remarkable contributions and outstanding efforts in elevating the AAU’s presence on the global stage.
In the United Kingdom, this is the highest title bestowed by a British university on individuals whom the university wishes to appoint, honor and work with. Queen Mary College – University of London considers this appointment an important means that enables the university to establish relationships with people who are distinguishing themselves either in their own academic disciplines or in fields of activities where QMUL would benefit from association. Through this means, QMUL enriches the breadth of its community and the breadth of people making contributions to its endeavours, as the university benefits from their skills and experience in contributing to university activities such as teaching, scientific research and community participation, in addition to contributing to the design and development of the university’s strategy for internationalization and global engagement.
Profile of Prof. Bakri Osman Saeed – President of the AAU Governing Board
Prof. Bakri Osman Saeed obtained a Bachelors degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Khartoum, a PhD from the University of Leeds in the UK, a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, a Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists, and a Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians, London, UK. He is currently the President of the Association of African Universities (AAU) and the President of Sudan International University. He is a UNESCO Chair in School Health Education. Before that, he was the Founding Dean of St. George’s International Medical School, which is a partnership between St. George’s University in Grenada and Northumbria University in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He started his career as a lecturer at the University of Khartoum, and then worked for many years as a Medical Consultant and Associate Professor at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and the University of London (UCL).
He has been a Visiting Professor for University of Northumbria in Newcastle and St George’s University in Grenada, where he was a Consultant to the Caribbean Reference Laboratory. He has been involved with many higher education and training bodies in the UK and in many other countries. In Sudan, he contributed significantly to the development of higher education as a Chair or member of important bodies and committees, including: the committee for revising the Higher Education Act, the committee for the evaluation of research proposals, the Ministry of Higher Education, Sudan, and the committee for the regulation of private higher education. He was involved in conflict resolution and peace promotion in Africa through his appointment as Special Advisor to the United Nations University for Peace.
