The Association of African Universities (AAU) proudly announces that Professor Frederick Ato Armah, Director of Research and Programmes at the AAU, has been elected as a Fellow of the prestigious Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences. His election was confirmed during the 219th General Meeting of Fellows on October 30, 2024. This honour recognizes individuals for their outstanding contributions to the fields of arts and sciences, and Prof. Armah’s inclusion reflects his significant impact in environmental and sustainability science in Ghana and beyond.
The Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, established in 1959, has been instrumental in shaping the intellectual and policy landscape of Ghana and beyond. With a vision to be the foremost merit-based learned society committed to national development and global advancement, the Academy strives to make its wealth of knowledge and expertise accessible to both national and global audiences. Notable early members include Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s former president, among its twenty Foundation Fellows.
Professor Frederick Ato Armah joined the AAU in November 2023 and has since served as the Director of Research and Programmes. He is a distinguished Professor of Environmental and Sustainability Science with extensive experience in institutional development, project management, and research. Since 1995, he has taught at all educational levels—basic, secondary, and tertiary. His leadership in designing, managing, and evaluating various development projects across Africa and beyond over the past 20 years is noteworthy. Prof. Armah has managed several multi-million-dollar research grants and collaborated with national, regional, and international stakeholders to enhance management tools and policies, conduct research, and address environmental, health, and social issues.
Prof. Armah’s academic and professional credentials are extensive. He holds numerous certificates in university leadership, project planning, and governance. He has consulted widely for organizations such as USAID, the World Bank, and the United Nations Environment Programme. As a prolific author, his works are published extensively in peer-reviewed journals of international repute. He was an Ontario Trillium Scholar in Canada from 2011 to 2015 and won the Association of American Publishers Awards for Professional and Scholarly Excellence (PROSE) in Environmental Sciences in 2020. Prof. Armah also served as the Director of Research, Innovation, and Consultancy at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana, from April 2019 to July 2022. Additionally, he is a Senior Research Fellow of the Earth Systems Governance initiative of the International Science Council and a member of the Intergovernmental Science Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).
The AAU celebrates Prof. Armah’s election to the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences as a testament to his contributions to environmental and sustainability science, leadership, and academic excellence.
In addition to Prof. Armah, the following distinguished individuals were also elected as Fellows of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences:
- Prof. Samuel Egyir Aggrey: An expert in poultry nutrigenomics, genetics, and gut health.
- Prof. Joe-Nat Afutu Clegg-Lamptey: Renowned as the leading breast surgeon in Ghana and the West African sub-region.
- Prof. Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe: A professor of Geography and Soil Science, with research encompassing geography, population studies, and climate change.
- Prof. Godfred Darko: A professor of Chemistry and recipient of the 2016 Young Research Award by the Egyptian Academy of Scientific Research and Technology.
- Prof. Emmanuel Bekoe Larbi: A retired professor of medicine and Fellow of various prestigious medical societies.
- Prof. Frederick Yeboah Obese: A professor of Animal Science and research scientist at the Animal Research Institute (ARI) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
- Prof. (Mrs) Ibok Nsa Ekpenyong Oduro: A professor of Postharvest Technology at KNUST in Ghana.
