Addressing Female STEM Lecturers’ Underrepresentation in Leadership in Technical Universities in Ghana

A British Council Gender Equality Partnerships Project

Introduction

Under the Gender Equality Partnerships Project, the Ho Technical University, the University of Nottingham, and the Association of African Universities invite female STEM lecturers at Ghanaian Technical Universities to participate in a two-day Writing Workshop to be held in Accra, Ghana, on Tuesday 13th and Wednesday 14th May 2025, followed by a 10-month Mentorship Programme designed to directly address participants’ challenges in securing leadership positions due to limited research output.

The aims of the writing workshop are outlined below:

  • to equip participants with the skills to improve their research writing, navigate the publication process and disseminate their research;
  • to provide a platform for participants to connect with peers, engage in mentorship and access international collaborations;
  • to elevate the participants’ confidence and improve leadership skills.

The Writing Workshop and Mentorship Programme draws on the collaborative partnership between Ho Technical University in Ghana (HTU), the Association of African Universities (AAU) and the University of Nottingham (UoN), and forms part of a larger qualitative, interdisciplinary study, co-designed and led by female scholars, that seeks to contribute valuable insights for promoting gender equity in STEM  leadership. You can read more about the project here.

The British Council Gender Equality Partnerships will sponsor thirty female STEM lecturers at Ghanaian Technical Universities to participate in this workshop and the subsequent 10-month mentorship programme. This sponsorship includes:

  • Participation/Registration Fees (workshop training materials, and certificates)
  • Accommodation for three nights (during the workshop)
  • Local transportation, refreshments and meals
