In Memory of Professor Faiza Mohamed Osman Mahmoud

The Association of African Universities (AAU) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Professor Faiza Mohamed Osman Mahmoud, Coordinator of the AAU East Africa Regional Office at the University of Khartoum, Sudan. Professor Mahmoud passed away in Cairo, Egypt, on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.

On behalf of the AAU Governing Board and the more than 450 higher education institutions that are members of the Association, the AAU Secretariat extends its heartfelt condolences to her family, the University of Khartoum community, and the Republic of Sudan. Professor Mahmoud’s unwavering dedication and influential contributions have left a lasting impact on the academic landscape of Africa.

Professor Mahmoud was a visionary leader and a staunch advocate for higher education in Africa. As Coordinator of the AAU East Africa Regional Office since 2018, she played an instrumental role in promoting collaboration, innovation, and excellence among universities in the region. Her relentless efforts to advance academic exchange, research partnerships, and capacity-building initiatives profoundly shaped the higher education sector in East Africa.

Her leadership was defined by her passion for empowering others and fostering unity within the academic community. Professor Mahmoud’s legacy will continue to inspire us as we build upon the solid foundations she established, carrying forward her mission to strengthen higher education across Africa.

To honour her memory and recognize her remarkable contributions, the AAU flag will be flown at half-mast outside the Secretariat from Monday, April 1, to Monday, April 7, 2025. This gesture reflects the deep respect and gratitude we hold for Professor Mahmoud and her unwavering commitment to educational transformation.

As we mourn her passing, we also celebrate her life and the achievements that defined her remarkable journey. We honor her memory by renewing our commitment to the AAU’s mission and continuing to work toward the advancement of higher education in Africa.

May her legacy continue to inspire future generations of African scholars, leaders, and changemakers.
May her soul rest in eternal peace.
