The Association of African Universities (AAU) expresses its profound sadness and deep sense of loss following the passing of Professor Mohamed El-Mahrasahwy, Vice-President of the AAU and former President of Al-Azhar University. Professor El-Mahrasahwy passed away in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday, March 27, 2025.

On behalf of the AAU Governing Board and the more than 450 higher education institutions that are members of the Association, the AAU Secretariat extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, the Al-Azhar University community, and the Republic of Egypt. His visionary leadership and unwavering dedication have left an indelible mark on Africa’s academic landscape.

Professor El-Mahrasahwy was a dedicated champion of African higher education and a leader who embodied the AAU’s mission. As Vice-President since 2021, he played a pivotal role in shaping the Association’s strategic vision and programs, fostering collaboration among African universities, and advancing academic excellence. His commitment to education was further demonstrated through the establishment of the AAU’s North Africa Regional Office (NARO) and his oversight of numerous impactful initiatives and partnerships.

Born in 1962, Professor El-Mahrasahwy earned his BA in Arabic Language from the College of Arabic Language in 1985. He began his career as a teaching assistant in the Department of Linguistics at the same college, steadily rising through the ranks to become Dean in 2013. He held a master’s degree in linguistics (1992) and a PhD in linguistics (1996). His distinguished academic journey included serving as Vice President of the Islamic Universities Association since 2019, as well as holding key roles at Al-Azhar University, the Supreme Constitutional Court, and the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs.

Professor El-Mahrasahwy’s wisdom, dedication, and guidance inspired generations of scholars, researchers, and academic leaders. His passing has created a profound void, and he will be deeply missed by the AAU community and beyond.

To honor his memory and contributions, the AAU flag will be flown at half-mast outside the Secretariat from Monday, April 1, to Monday, April 7, 2025. This gesture symbolizes the deep respect and gratitude we hold for Professor El-Mahrasahwy and his lifelong dedication to the advancement of education in Africa.

As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate his life and remarkable achievements. We reaffirm our commitment to the AAU’s mission and continue to work toward the transformation of higher education in Africa, inspired by his enduring legacy.
