Register to Participate -AAU/IUFoST Roundtable Discussion on Scaling Up Food Processing in Africa – The Role of Young Scientists

  1. Background and Rationale

The Association of African Universities (AAU), in collaboration with the International Union of Food Science and Technology (IUFoST), recognizes the vital role of young and early career food scientists in shaping Africa’s food security and sustainable development goals. Supporting innovation, fostering excellence, and providing platforms for leadership development will strengthen Africa’s capacity for research, entrepreneurship, and industrial development in food systems.

The AAU/IUFoST Programme for Young Scientists / Early Career Scientists aims to create opportunities for emerging talent to showcase their innovative ideas, connect with mentors and industry leaders, and receive recognition for outstanding contributions.

  1. Objectives
  • To encourage innovation and excellence in food science and technology among young and early career scientists in Africa.
  • To provide a platform for showcasing research and innovation in scaling up food processing in Africa.
  • To foster leadership, entrepreneurship, and career development opportunities for early career food scientists.
  • To honour and celebrate the achievements of young scientists who are contributing to Africa’s food security and industrial growth.

Event Title: Roundtable Discussion and Young Scientist Innovation Competition: “Scaling Up Food Processing in Africa – The Role of Young Scientists”

Format:

Activity Duration Description
Opening Remarks 5 minutes Welcome by SG, AAU & President, IUFoST
Keynote Address 5 minutes Brief introduction and keynote highlighting opportunities for young scientists in Africa’s food processing sector.
Roundtable Discussion (led by Early Career Scientists) 40 minutes Early Career Scientists (4–5 panelists) present on innovations in food processing, challenges, and opportunities for scaling up.
Young Scientist Pitch Competition 30 minutes Selected finalists (5–6 young scientists) each deliver a 5-minute pitch on their innovation or research project aimed at transforming food processing in Africa.
Jury Deliberation and Audience Poll 10 minutes Jury evaluates pitches, and audience votes (if hybrid/virtual) to contribute to scoring.
Announcement of Winners and Closing 10 minutes Announcement of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize winners; brief closing remarks.
