The Association of African Universities is calling on all African Universities and Higher Education Institutions to accelerate and intensity efforts of undertaking relevant research to drive policies towards attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s).
Research plays a critical role in the development of world economies and now more than ever, Higher education institutions in Africa are being challenged to rise up to the task of leading continental, regional and national achievement of the 17 SDG’s. The availability of evidence based data to support programmes and monitoring and evaluation is key. Africa is counting on all HEI’s to play this critical role among several others.
The tough developmental challenges faced by Africa requires tough solutions in tackling them. These solutions can be arrived at mainly through quality research. Quality research and availability of credible data collected through research would help generate practicable innovative solutions and strategies needed to achieve the SDG’s.
African Higher Education must collaborate on SDG’s
The AAU had earlier called on all African higher institutions to collaborate on the march towards achieving the SDG’s. Indeed, universities have in the past, and will continue to, collaborate on various areas of teaching, learning, information sharing and in many other folds. The point of interest at this stage is for HEI’s to substantially put shoulders to the wheel in concert to lead the change process by contributing to the development of innovative solutions which will have real impact in the lives of people on the continent.
