Supporting Academic Libraries in the COVID-19 Era

Let's Beat COVID-19

The functions of academic libraries are among other things to provide conducive, safe and social spaces for meeting and studying, as well as provide support services and relevant materials and resources that support academic work and research.  But as it were, we are now living in unusual times. With the outbreak of COVID-19 and the subsequent lock down, movement has been restricted and schools have closed down. The physical infrastructure is no more as useful or helpful as before and most practitioners in the information profession have suddenly woken up to new reality.

As the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent lock down imposed by many governments play out, how is the library community providing  support for the faculty/teachers and students?

The Association of African University in collaboration with African Library and Information Associations and Institutions (AfLIA) is organising a webinar  to engage Librarians as information professionals on how they can support their faculty and students in the new virtual learning reality. The following areas will be tackled during the webinar

  • How can libraries support the teaching and learning process in a virtual environment?
  • Practical ways of engaging the faculty and students in their core tasks
  • How will academic libraries provide support for students who can no longer visit the physical library because they are out of campus
  • Planning ahead for the post COVID-19 era
  • What lessons for Library schools as they prepare the future information professionals?

Well, despite the effects of the pandemic, education is a continuous process. I would have loved to contribute my inputs to a website. But, sadly seems it had past already.
