Condolence Message Following The Car Bomb Attack In Mogadishu Somalia
Accra, Ghana, 28 December 2019
It is with deep sorrow, concern and regret that the Secretary General of the Association of African Universities (AAU) received the news of a car bomb attack in Mogadishu Somalia on Saturday 28 December 2019. On his own behalf and that of the Governing Board of the AAU, the 400 AAU member universities, AAU partner organizations and the African Higher Education stakeholders we extend our heartfelt condolences on the scores of lives that were lost. We wish those that were injured a speedy recovery.
It is quite unfortunate that most of those killed were university students and other students returning to their schools and universities to resume their learning activities. We mourn the deaths of so many young people as Somalia tries to rebuild itself after decades of conflict.
The AAU continues to prioritize programmes to encourage a peaceful and secure Africa through Quality Higher Education. These include activities to promote peace and security, stimulate multidisciplinary approaches to dealing with peace and security in Africa and accelerating the development of systems, programmes and policies to deal with threats to national and continental peace and security.
Our support to the AAU Member Universities in the Federal Republic of Somalia will continue through Higher Education. The AAU will continue to support the legitimate desire of the people of Somalia to live in freedom, peace and security.
